Educational practices are incredibly diverse, not only around the world, but also within a school. What some might see as the best approach for the education of children, can see others, like a mediocre attempt to do so.
The video "Pre-school in three different cultures," illustrates this diversity in educational styles to the viewer. The documentation consists of the filming of three different pre-schools in different countries in the period of a normal day. TheSummary of activities of the day in the video for each of the given pre-schools to analyze the viewer to both the social and scientific aspects of the experience of children throughout the day. The pre-schools that are in the video Komatsudani from Japan, Dong-feng from China, and St.Timothy from the U.S. (Hawaii). The following paper is light on the so-called constructivism and behaviorism, and describe which is one of the schools eachCategory.
Constructivism is the theory that views children as little individual scientists. If, on the theory of constructivism, the students are allowed to explore their environment, interact with it and learn from it. The constructivist teacher acts as a cornerstone for students to lean on when in need, not the leaders that must be followed by all. Constructivism also sees differences between the children and what they learn from their interactions, not everyonelearns the same things at the same speed or with the same ease.
After I seem to see the video, the school that have the constructivist approach is St.Timothy. When it's time for participating students to an activity, the teacher gave them the opportunity to choose the activity they prefer, rather than an assignment of them, or make the whole class do the same. This approach enables the students to an activity that can promote it, which tends to contribute toTo let students learn much more than an activity which they find boring. It is also worth noting that if the students chose an activity by the representative objects of the teachers, the student was aware that she wanted to be included with the spoken language. The teacher used a constructivist approach, if you use this, because they build are not guided the students how the sentence, but she had her own records and correct them if theyrequired.
One of the activities, and the teacher's comment on the activities, shows the constructivist ideal than any other to see what's in the video. The activity is called the block construction, while the students are allowed to decide the blocks in any way he merged. This is a very different approach to in one of the other schools where students are given specific guidelines to follow when you use the blocks. When asked aboutThe difference in approaches replied that the teacher in St.Timothy that she thought their approach was better because when you let children build their own structures, they sometimes come with things that never even think of the teacher. This is a great example of the idea that children are like little scientists with very different approaches to learning from their environment.
Another aspect in which St.Timothy 's attempts were very Constructivists behavior and wasDiscipline. It is an instance during the day, to clean up a student who refuses to the materials even after the teacher has asked him to do so directly. Instead of the arrangement to bring the students the materials with their authority, like many teachers tend to the teacher talks to him on the same level. It is not only dedicated his boss, the things away, but attempts to persuade the students to the impact that might come about from not picking up the materials. Theyexplained to the students that if the materials are not picked up some of his classmates could to the injured. After he refuses to meet again, the teacher gives him two options. The student has to choose between spending time alone or collection of materials. It takes no longer than a minute before the student decides to comply.
Some might argue that the Japanese approach to behavior and discipline regarding Komatsudani is constructivists because it has fewerTeacher participation, but the teacher, the concept seems to be more than negligent constructivism. The principal of the school is quoted as saying that it is normal and even necessary for boys to fight because the way that they learn how to solve problems that may occur later in life. The statement might have some truth, but as his own statement says, are the children learn and therefore not to have the necessary skills to solve these problems. As a teacher, you can let themtry to solve the problem myself, but always keep a very close surveillance. It is not a good approach to simply ignore the situation or say, a child, "why do not you do something about it?" As one teacher was quoted at Komatsudani the words when told about misconduct by another child.
Behaviorism is the theory that states that people can be taught through the use of rewards and / or punishment. The theory is also considered as the repetitive of the two theories, because they oftenenvisions the use of drill and practice as the main form of teaching. In behaviorism the teacher is the focus of the class and all students must often follow the instructions exactly as they are given.
The school, which most resembles the ideals of the behaviorist theory in the video was Dong-feng from China. One of the first examples of this is when the 4:2:1 phenomenon is explained. The 4:2:1 phenomenon occurs due to the attempts to reduce the Chinese population. AfterOfficials at the school, the problem is that today more than ever, many children are individual children who are showered with attention from two parents and four grandparents. Behaviorism is displayed when the school staff, they said that, the mistakes of their parents and grandparents of the children's behavior caused by excessive attention and remove spoil done.
Another example in which the school behaviorist approach was clear, the bathroom was using. The school bathroomUsage approach was weird to say the least, all students to go the bathroom at the same time and same place. The teachers said that if a student really needed to the facilities he or she could use on a different date than the scheduled one go, but that it was good for students with the concept of planning and in getting to do their best are guidelines to adjust the time.
The school behaviorist approach was also apparent during the formalInstruction and before eating. Before each meal, the students must always giving thanks for their food by reciting a chant choir, that something like "this food sure smells good participation goes, I bet it's delicious, I am so thankful for my mom and dad . The repetition of this song serves as a way of reinforcing the idea that students should be thankful for their parents and their parents what they could give as a meal.
When it comes to their formal educationApproach is very behaviorist and completely different than the approach taken by St.Timothy. Im Dong-feng the students are given detailed instructions on how to set up with the wooden blocks work and the materials in a certain way before they are ever allowed to start. Once they start building their wooden structures, they must follow the guidelines and will not be used a positive reinforcement if they deviate from them by something different or creative. Instead of rewardingCreativity, as the staff in St.Timothy seems the staff at Dong-feng just about the ability of students to follow instructions for care.
When it comes to education and training of students with cultural and linguistic diversity, one must always have the lessons are interesting and original. As a future teacher is, my area of expertise likely to math. My classes contain as many visual components as possible and as much student participation as possible the teaching. I want to motivateStudents to take risks by making a constructivism-behaviorism-constructivism sandwich. The students will receive a task, add to, they do not yet have the skills for. During this time, encouraged the students to brainstorm ideas on how the task could be completed, right and wrong approaches will be hailed as a success, the most important thing is that they are willing to try new things. Once the brainstorming period is done, I'll tell them exactly how the task is verynormally closed. The students will get some time in practice following the specific steps that enable them to complete the task. Once they are confident enough to appear with these steps, they are given the freedom to experiment with other approaches that they might have thought, after she taught the stairs. You are encouraged to use all the methods that make the task easier for them as long as it's going to the right answer. You will also learn that it is perfectly proper toYou use the steps taught to the teachers, but that the approach may not be the only or the easiest book.
In conclusion, be said, I think, that neither in education nor behaviorism constructivism all the answers. As a teacher you need to find a midpoint, a way to combine the best aspects of both in order to provide the best learning environment and the results available. It is my opinion that St.Timothy was the better school among the top three when it comes to formal training and correction of wrongdoing. I also thinkit is worth noting that both Komatsudani The staff is the lack of action by the students and Dong-feng's bathroom routine were somewhat disconcerting discipline.
